Signs Enough
By Larry Doyle Crenshaw
MeditationsInLight.Blogspot.com

There are signs enough in every inch of space
Testifying of God’s presence in our daily lives
As we seek Him by faith and receive Him by grace
Our testimony grows and prospers and thrives

The more that science unfolds the many universes in a single cube of space, the more we see signs of a Creator whose works are endless.   The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians saying that this Creator is the “…Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in (us) all.”  (Ephesians 4:6)  A modern revelation of this truth elaborates that “…This is the light of Christ. As also he is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made. 8 As also he is in the moon, and is the light of the moon, and the power thereof by which it was made;9 As also the light of the stars, and the power thereof by which they were made;10 And the earth also, and the power thereof, even the earth upon which you stand.11 And the light which shineth, which giveth you light, is through him who enlighteneth your eyes, which is the same light that quickeneth your understandings; 12 Which light proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space—13 The light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of God who sitteth upon his throne, who is in the bosom of eternity, who is in the midst of all things." (Doctrine and Covenants 88:7-13)

“All things denote there is a God,” says an ancient prophet.  (Alma 30:44)  The leaf of tree, a blade of grass, a snow flake, a raindrop, and all the wonders of creation exclaim, “There is a God!”  God is proclaimed both in the death we call birth and in the birth we call death.  As our spirit temporarily leaves behind a world of spirit-family to come to Earth to inhabit a body and live with a mortal family, evidence of God is in the miracle of birth.  Later, as our spirit leaves our body and we temporarily leave our Earthly family when our mission on Earth is done, evidence of God is in the miracle we call death.   This cycle of life continues throughout a universe where God organizes, controls, and directs the elements according to His plan and purpose.  The elements of the universe seem to exist and to be organized primarily to support and sustain the offspring, the family, of God.   Through it all, we sense an inward, even cellular believe, supported by a doctrinal thread of understanding that we, like the elements, are eternal and that our families can be also.  Indeed, there are signs enough.

We find it hard to imagine a perspective devoid of such a point of view of the Divine.  Yet more and more of our fellow human beings seem to be losing faith in the Divine.  Yet we continue to look, to seek for signs and something higher than ourselves.  In our mediation this week we hear this issue discussed between two antagonists.  After hearing the summary of the exchange we ask….

Do we also look for Deity’s outward signs
When our heart and soul seek affirmation
That a divine presence around us shines
Providing comfort and heavenly confirmation

Signs Enough

And now Korihor said unto Alma: If thou wilt show me a sign,  that I may be convinced that there is a God, yea, show unto me that he hath power, and then will I be convinced of the truth of thy words.  But Alma said unto him: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator
Book of Mormon   Alma 30:43-44

Korihor, an Antichrist, and Alma, a prophet of God:

Korihor:
“Alma, convince me there’s a God, I plea
That perchance I may worship him
Show me a sign that my eyes can see
For my vision of such is rather dim”

“It is foolishness to believe in divinity
And vain to believe a Christ shall come
Or yoke oneself to an empty trinity
To such vanities I will not succumb”

Alma:
“Korihor, thou hast been possessed
A lying spirit carries you about
Working devices that may molest
God’s children and put them to rout”

“Why sleekest thou to arouse commotion
Thou hast signs enough and sufficient
Scriptures, the earth, and planets in motion
Profess a God glorified and beneficent”

You and Me:
Do we also look for Deity’s outward signs
When our heart and soul seek affirmation
That a divine presence around us shines
Providing comfort and heavenly confirmation

There are signs enough in every inch of space
Testifying of God’s presence in our daily lives
As we seek Him by faith and receive Him by grace
Our testimony grows and prospers and thrives

Small and Simple Things

By Larry Doyle Crenshaw
MeditationsInLight.Blogspot.com

Some suppose it is foolish and imprudent
To believe that from small and simple things
Great things can evolve nearly incandescent
Full of light, worthy of prophets and kings

We are often reminded that it is the “small and simple things” that can either bless us or curse us.  Simple but consistent acts of kindness build a character of kindness. Small but regular habits of study build a mind full of knowledge.  Because this is a universal law it operates entirely within the principles of justice and mercy. Hence, small but consistent acts that intentionally inflict harm build a character of evil. Likewise, habits of sloth and procrastination build a character that is indolent and inept.

There is ample evidence that God’s favorite and preferred method of accomplishment is by small and simple things.  As wondrous as Earth’s creation was, it was done a piece at a time, over intervals of time, and by beings who were less developed than Himself.  The creation of a mighty oak begins with, not just the little acorn, but microscopically smaller elements of molecules and atoms.

Our life’s journey is but a compilation of small and simple things repeated on a daily basis.  This truth is the focus of our meditation “Small and Simple Things” which reveals clearly how God uses such things, including us, to establish and build His kingdom.

We too, are small and simple in God’s grand design
Acorns we are to the mighty oaks in heaven above
Children of Christ, who will sanctify and refine
Children of the Father, who will teach and love

Small and Simple Things

Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.  And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.  And now, it has hitherto been wisdom in God that these things should be preserved; for behold, they have enlarged the memory of this people, yea, and convinced many of the error of their ways, and brought them to the knowledge of their God unto the salvation of their souls.
Book of Mormon  Alma 37:6-8

Some suppose it is foolish and imprudent
To believe that from small and simple things
Great things can evolve nearly incandescent
Full of light, worthy of prophets and kings

By little things great things are brought to pass
And oft times small means confound the wise
Seeds of faith become trees of knowledge at last
Such gifts become a precious and eternal prize

God works by small and simple means
To bring about the salvation of many souls
His method is not always what it seems
To those unskilled in the work He controls

A serpent staff, plates of brass, the testimony of a boy
At one time these all were things simple and small
But by these means came faith, knowledge and joy
By such means God redeems us from the fall

We too, are small and simple in God’s grand design
Acorns we are to the mighty oaks in heaven above
Children of Christ, who will sanctify and refine
Children of the Father, who will teach and love

The Holy Order
By Larry Doyle Crenshaw
MeditationsInLight.Blogspot.com

God forever ordains High Priests
After the Order of the Son of God
Anointing the greatest to the least
As stanchions for His iron rod

There is an ancient order of priesthood in God’s kingdom which a scriptural text explains,  “…. was from the foundation of the world; or in other words, being without beginning of days or end of years, being prepared from eternity to all eternity, according to his (God’s) foreknowledge of all things” Book of Mormon, (Alma 13:5-7).  This order of priesthood is after the order of the Son of God, even Jesus Christ who the Apostle Paul extolled as a high priest forever. (See Hebrews 5:10-6)

In Old Testament times the greater priesthood was taken away from the body of Israel, who would thereafter receive the ministrations of the Mosaic law and ordinances in the temple through a “lesser” high priest after the order of Aaron and his successors.  Notwithstanding, each of the ancient Old Testament prophets from Adam onward personally received the higher priesthood and officiated as a high priest in the higher order. (See Doctrine and Covenants 107).

In our day the fullness of the priesthood has been restored, including the office of high priest. Those holding this office generally officiate in presiding ministerial functions within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

We honor that “Holy Order” in our meditative verse based on the Book of Mormon text found in Alma chapter thirteen.

High Priests - standing clerics of truth and light
Ordained and commissioned by the great I AM
Their countenances bright, garments washed white
Sanctified through the Blood of the Lamb

The Holy Order

This high priesthood being after the order of his Son, which order was from the foundation of the world; or in other words, being without beginning of days or end of years, being prepared from eternity to all eternity, according to his foreknowledge of all things—  Now they were ordained after this manner—being called with a holy calling, and ordained with a holy ordinance, and taking upon them the high priesthood of the holy order, which calling, and ordinance, and high priesthood, is without beginning or end—  Thus they become high priests forever, after the order of the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, who is without beginning of days or end of years, who is full of grace, equity, and truth. And thus it is. Amen.
Book of Mormon   Alma 13:7-9

God forever ordains High Priests
After the Order of the Son of God
Anointing the greatest to the least
As stanchions for His iron rod

Called from the foundation of the earth
According to the foreknowledge of the Lord
Anointed kings and priests long before birth
Ordained to holiness with sacred works to accord

An order without beginning of days or end of years
Ordained by Him full of equity, truth and grace
Men of holy station - a kingdom of saintly peers
Ordained soldiers of Christ secure in His embrace

High Priests - standing clerics of truth and light
Ordained and commissioned by the great I AM
Their countenances bright, garments washed white
Sanctified through the Blood of the Lamb

Shadows, Types, and Symbols

By Larry Doyle Crenshaw
MeditationsInLight.Blogspot.com

What comes before shadows what comes next
Such are the scriptures with layers for gleaning
Parables and doctrine that confuse and perplex
Those unversed in discernments and meaning

Ancient scripture contains hundreds, if not thousands, of words and concepts that are symbols designed to obscure understanding by the spiritually less-informed and to act as directional beacons for those spiritually attuned. These symbols may be referred to as types and when they portend to reveal or point to the future, they may be referred to as shadows.

Hence, we see the symbol, type, and shadow of Christ in the Brazen (bronze) Serpent (Numbers 21:9) being lifted up on a staff for those who had been bitten by snakes to look upon and live.  We see the ancient Ark and the Ark of the Covenant as symbols and shadows of the Gospel of Jesus Christ which has within the power of salvation.  Likewise we see in the shepherd’s crook (staff) the symbol of Christ, the Good Shepherd. The list could go on and on siting both ancient and modern texts.

The scriptural scholar Joseph Fielding McConkie has written: "There are few if any stories in the scriptures that do not cast a shadow, that are not types or illustrations of greater principles or events. Virtually every passage of scripture is layered with meaning, and its full interpretation need not be limited to our present understanding. . . . For us to begin to see those countless types and shadows, the endless symbolic representations of Christ, is for us to be ever assured of the reality of his gospel and the blessings enjoyed by those who choose to live it" ( Gospel Symbolism, 249).

Thus, we affirm in our meditative verse –

All things bear witness of Christ
And all things have their similarity
If we are willing to pay the price
To explore and expose their clarity . . . .

Might we approach the sacred more soundly
Through doctrine and principles to depose
By searching the scriptures more profoundly
Their hidden types and shadows to expose

Shadows, Types, and Symbols

…they did look forward to the coming of Christ, considering that the law of Moses was a type of his coming, and believing that they must keep those outward performances until the time that he should be revealed unto them.
Book of Mormon   Alma 25:15

What comes before shadows what comes next
Such are the scriptures with layers for gleaning
Parables and doctrine that confuse and perplex
Those unversed in discernments and meaning

Learning the language of shadows and types
Can be dauntingly hard and an arduous task
For in hidden layers of truth God often writes
Pearls hidden safely behind a shadowed mask

All things bear witness of Christ
And all things have their similarity
If we are willing to pay the price
To explore and expose their clarity

Types and shadows are like prisms of light
That reflect rays of altered color or hue
The language of types and shadows give insight
As veiled messages and meanings come into view

Might we approach the sacred more soundly
Through doctrine and principles to depose
By searching the scriptures more profoundly
Their hidden types and shadows to expose
