APOSTASY

By Larry Doyle Crenshaw, MeditationsInLight.blogspot.com

An ancient prophet once affirmed his desire to, “…. walk in the path of the low valley, that I may be strict in the plain road!” (2 Nephi 4:32)  He understood well the dangers of mountainous terrain and their slippery slopes that present life-threatening hazards in our journey through life.

Apostasy, the abandoning of former beliefs, is a slippery slope.  Generally, apostasy from the truth is a gradual thing - built upon small deviations from the straight and narrow path, otherwise known as “the plain road.”  Like addiction in many ways, this kind of apostasy appeals to the carnal mind and senses.

When the mind and heart seek reassurance that a dark and crooked path will “take me where I want to go,” there is usually a whispered reassurance from a vaguely familiar source.  After all, the path of misery invites company.  And our fellow traveler on this deviated path wishes all to “be miserable like unto himself.”

There are far too many of our Church-friends who once enjoyed the blessings of covenant living – but no more.  These are folks who, step by step, and decision by decision, found the plain road perhaps too plain, or perhaps too strict, or who felt the tolls cost too much. Unrepented apostasy for them, will take a heavy toll. The road back requires a bended knee and a prayer-filled voice.  The cost of sin has already been paid by Him who died on Calvary and whose Atoning embrace awaits.

On a larger scale during the last many decades there have been small but significant deviations from the “plain road” in our country.  Legislators, judges, and others of political influence have given legal sanctuary to more and more base and carnal behaviors.  This is in direct fulfillment of the prophetic voice that has told us “what was evil will be called good and what was good will be called evil.” Even small course deviations of a degree or two, over time, lead to unanticipated and unwanted destinations.  Thus, as a result of apostasy from truth, we find ourselves exactly where prophets have said we would be.

This week’s meditative verse warns of apostasy’s subtle ways and means and ends.  However, there is a promise of redemptive grace from Him whose Atonement can, paradoxically, deliver us from a place of no deliverance.

Apostasy
For behold, at that day shall he rage in the hearts of the children of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good.  And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell.  And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.
Book of Mormon   2 Nephi 28:20-22

To abandon a truth that one believes
Happens not all-at-once, but incrementally
When Satan’s snares wraps and weaves
Through a soul so subtle and maliciously

He rages in hearts and stirs up anger
To things exact and true and good
Into apostasy’s pit they fall and languor
Feeling bitter, angry, and misunderstood

Some are pacified and lulled away
Persuaded and inured by Satan’s detours
He cheats their souls and leads them astray
Into dark paths of carnality he allures

The gullible he seduces and flatters away
Saying there is no evil, no devil or hell
Whispered words that entrap and betray
For misery and sorrow he doeth sell

Apostasy binds with awful chains
And delivers to a place of no deliverance
A hell of worries, troubles and pains
An abode for those who forego repentance

Yet salvation is heaven-sent
To all who humbly bow the knee
And apply the Divine Atonement
From He who died on Calvary

WE TALK OF CHRIST

MeditationsInLight.blogspot.com by Larry Doyle Crenshaw

In this week’s meditative verse “We Talk of Christ.” In doing so, I reaffirm my testimony of His divinity:

CHRIST IS MY ADVOCATE
John tells us “If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father,” who is, “Jesus Christ the righteous.” (1 John 2:1)

CHRIST IS MY RECONCILER
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;  19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:18-19)

CHRIST IS MY SAVIOR
10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.  … 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.  (Acts 4: 10-12)

CHRIST IS MY RIGHTEOUS JUDGE.
The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgement unto the Son, that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father…. as I hear, I judge; and my judgement is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.” (John 5:22-23, 30)

CHRIST IS THE MESSENGER OF MY TEMPLE COVENANTS.
“...and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to this temple, even the messenger of the covenant...” (Malachi 3:1)

CHRIST IS THE GOD OF MY FATHERS.
“For this intent have we written these things, that they (the children) may know that we knew of Christ, and we had a hope of his glory many hundred years before his coming; and not only we ourselves had a hope of his glory, but also all the holy prophets which were before us.  Behold, they believed in Christ and worshiped the Father in his name...” (Jacob 4:4)

CHRIST, IN A SAVING, SPIRITUAL SENSE IS MY FATHER.
Under the direction of the Father -Elohim, Christ is the Creator of this earth, and of worlds without number.  He is “the Father of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are. (Ether 4:7)  He is the Father of all those who believe and obey His law. (Mosiah 5:7-8)  You and I have the right to “become [his] sons and daughters.”    Thus we become “the children of Christ, his sons and daughters”... “spiritually begotten” by Him as we “take upon us His name.” (Doctrine & Covenants 39:4)

We Talk of Christ
And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.
Book of Mormon  2 Nephi 25:26-27

We talk of Christ and know
He is the remitter of sins
And if to His alter we go
Freedom from sin begins

Freed from sin’s tribulations
Freed from sin’s blinding
Freed from sin’s privations
Freed from sin’s binding

In Christ Jesus, Our Lord
Is Moses’ Law fulfilled
Where grace is our reward
And love of God instilled

Of Christ we prophesy and preach
According to prophecies we write
Of salvation within our reach
As we strive with all our might

Teaching our children to know
To what source they may turn
When they, their sins forego
And the Spirit begins to burn

In Christ Jesus we rejoice
We praise His holy name
And with pen and voice
His Atonement we exclaim

Saved, anointed and esteemed
When Christ’s Atonement is applied
Sanctified, purchased and redeemed
By Jesus, who for us on Calvary died

THE ROBE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

MeditationsInLight.BlogSpot.com by Larry Doyle Crenshaw

The Prophet Isaiah sees the righteous people of the earth in the last days and records, “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, …..” (Isaiah 61:10)

This week’s meditative prayer asks the Lord for the protection proffered by the robe of righteousness for us in our day and time of need.  In the same verse noted above these sacred articles of clothing are also called “the garments of salvation.”  Whether or not this clothing is to be taken literally or figuratively, it is clear from many other passages of scripture that vestments of purity and power are required for entry and membership into God’s Kingdom.

If literally interpreted, then we might well ask, “Where do we find such royal and holy apparel today as part of our worship and preparations for life in God’s Kingdom hereafter? After all, according to the Apostle Peter, we will one day enter God’s Kingdom and become royalty.  “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.” (1 Peter 2:9) So, if we are to become royalty and apparently be ordained to the priesthood, and if we are to be appropriately attired, where do we find the authority to wear such royal and priestly attire?  Who is authorized to invest us with these robes?”  Historically, investiture of future prophets and priests and kings was done only by those having authority and were accompanied by ritual and solemn ordinances, generally conducted in a temple.  Do these exist today?  If so, where?

It is interesting to note in selected verses from Revelation chapter 3 that Christ anticipates that those who sincerely follow Him will be the recipients of such royal rewards:

"5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels …. 11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.  12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out:  ….20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.  21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne."

If Isaiah 61 is only figurative, then we might venture to guess that the robe of righteousness is symbolic of the commandments, which, when obeyed, provide protection from Satan’s probes and attacks.  Likewise, it may refer to the “robe” of faith that insulates us from the unknown and from despair.  Or it may also refer to the “works of righteousness” which flow from such faith.

The grandest conjecture of all would be that reference to the robe of righteousness is both figurative AND literal.  If both literal and figurative it would mean that all of the things mentioned above and perhaps much more would be and should be part of our divine worship.  For this to be true, we would have to have the power of God on earth and authorized Godly agents acting in His behalf.  We would need temples dedicated to the work of endowing righteous, prepared, and qualified sons and daughters of God, and placing upon them the robe of righteousness as part of the process of preparing them to “sit with Him in His throne.”

For those of differing faiths who may read this, ponder well these questions.  And know that I and many others are firm in the knowledge that God’s children of ancient days and His children today do have access to the robes of righteousness. Faith, repentance, baptism, and bestowal of the Holy Ghost are basic prerequisites.  Which, of themselves, prepare us for additional worship in God’s temple wherein we receive His blessings and learn more about how we quality to sit with Him nigh unto the throne of God, Our Father.  This week’s meditative prayer, set to verse, seeks the blessings, the comfort, the peace and the spiritual power bestowed by “The Robe of Righteousness.”

The Robe of Righteousness

O Lord, wilt thou redeem my soul? Wilt thou deliver me out of the hands of mine enemies? Wilt thou make me that I may shake at the appearance of sin?  May the gates of hell be shut continually before me, because that my heart is broken and my spirit is contrite! O Lord, wilt thou not shut the gates of thy righteousness before me, that I may walk in the path of the low valley, that I may be strict in the plain road!  O Lord, wilt thou encircle me around in the robe of thy righteousness!

Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 4:31-34

Wilt thou redeem my soul from the evil den?
Deliver me from mine enemies and foes
Make me shake at the appearance of sin
Shut the gates of hell and its infernal woes

Open the gates of thy righteousness
That I may walk in the low valley’s path
Strict in the plain road’s narrowness
Away from mine enemies’ wrath

May my path be narrow and straight
With no stumbling blocks in the way
And safe from those lying in wait
That I’ll be neither victim nor prey

Encircle me in thy righteous robe
That I may feel its protective power
Safe from sin and Satan’s probe
A robe to endow and empower

Never will I trust in man’s arm
But on the arm of Jehovah rely
To keep me free from hurt and harm
Until life is over and homeward I fly

A PRAYER FOR LIBERTY

MeditationsInLight.BlogSpot.com Larry Doyle Crenshaw

When power is concentrated into the hands of an unelected few who judge, not according to the divinely appointed instrument of justice and law, but by political winds fanned by a minority, the people will be betrayed.  In recent days we have experienced the results of such conduct as the balance of power rooted deeply within our system of government was shaken.  History records other instances of rule by the whim of the few. Such experiences lead to a circumstance wherein people find themselves outside the protection of divine providence - putting themselves at risk to “internal and external invaders.”

We are reminded of one of our Founding Father’s statements in this regard.  In a letter to James Warren (a General in the Massachusetts militia) on February 12, 1779, Samuel Adams said, “A general Dissolution of Principles & Manners will more surely overthrow the Liberties of America than the whole Force of the Common Enemy. While the People are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their Virtue they will be ready to surrender their Liberties to the first external or internal Invader. How necessary then is it for those who are determind to transmit the Blessings of Liberty as a fair Inheritance to Posterity, to associate on publick Principles in Support of publick virtue.”

In this 239th year of liberty, we offer these testimonial perspectives as celebration and warning:

1.       We are still the greatest nation on earth – but that is eroding.
2.       We are still a God-worshipping nation – but that is eroding.
3.       We are still free to think and speak and act according to our religious convictions – but that is eroding.
4.       We are still a nation ruled by a divinely inspired constitution – but that is eroding.
5.       We are still a nation of enormous wealth and resources – but they are eroding.
6.       We are still a nation with the strongest military might in the world – but that is eroding.
7.       We are still one of the most highly educated nations on earth – but that is eroding.
8.       We are still one of the healthiest nations in the world – but that is eroding.
9.       We are still one of the most generous and charitable nations on earth – but that is eroding.
10.   We are still like “a shining city upon a hill,” but the light is dimming and our liberties are eroding.

This week we celebrate our Independence from government tyranny.  Though, in some respects, as noted above, the tyranny of complacency, iniquity, and ineptitude is eroding our national character and sapping our strength. In coming days, we will have the opportunity to vote for executive and legislative leaders who can, with our active help and support, stop the erosion noted above and lead us toward greater personal liberty and prosperity. They need to have vision, courage, and a deep and abiding faith in this Land of Liberty and its Divine heritage.

This week we reflect on America as a Land of Liberty in both ancient and modern days. The message of ancient America is the message for modern America in this week’s meditative verse entitled “A Prayer for Liberty.”

- A Prayer for Liberty -

Wherefore, this land is consecrated unto him whom he shall bring. And if it so be that they shall serve him according to the commandments which he hath given, it shall be a land of liberty unto them; wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity; if so, it shall be because of iniquity; for if iniquity shall abound cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever.
Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 1:7

May this Land of Liberty be set apart
For all whom God shall bring
Seeking liberty with all their heart
Longing to hear the bell of freedom ring

Bless this land, may it be consecrated
For souls willing to toil and serve
For those devoted and dedicated
To Thy laws and Thy ways observe

May it never be a land of captivity
As we hold fast to Truth’s Iron Rod
Never to embrace nor turn to iniquity
Incurring the wrath of an angry God

May this land be a Promised Land
Strong and proud, may it never fall
As we fight for right and take a stand
May it be one nation, under God, for all
